Why I Started 'Taylored' Therapies

"Do you follow an evening routine? Is the room dark when you try to put him to sleep? Maybe he's just picking up on your nervous energy. Somes kids just need less sleep than others. You're just a new mom and not use to waking up in the middle of the night with a baby"

This was the expert advice I received while tyring to express to my son's pediatricians how concerned I was that he slept an average of 6 hours a day instead of the typical 17 hours for a newborn.

The fact that I was the oldest of three kids, babysat for the neighborhood kids since I was 12 and for years worked at a preschool putting other people's children to sleep did not appear to influence their opinion of my parenting skills. They also did not seem impressed that as an OT I had worked primarily in pediatrics for 10 years or that I was certified in the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test, meaning I had many tools in my OT toolbox to help others regulate their alertness levels.

If there wasn't a lab test, formula or medication that could be prescribed our pediatricians were at a loss and had no one to refer us to.

Heather Taylor is the owner and founder of ‘Taylored’ Therapies, PLLC. In her 19+ years as an occupational therapist, Heather has worked in a variety of settings - most often in schools, daycares, homes, and pediatric clinics but also in long term care facilities and day treatment programs for adults with traumatic brain injuries.

Heather’s early career focused on providing the best treatments possible for children in early intervention and school-aged programs which lead her to take continuing education classes in fine motor development, vision development, feeding, handwriting, and ultimately lead to her completing the coursework needed to become certified in the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test in 2010. The following year Heather took her first class in Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration techniques and within four years completed her coursework to become a Core Specialist with MNRI®.

While Heather continues to work with children, MNRI® has allowed her scope of practice to widen and she now works with adults as well to enhance their motor skills, sensory processing skills, and emotional well-being.
